Image Gallery Description & Details

Reginald Heber was an important 19th-century missionary to India, who would become Lord Bishop of Calcutta. He is responsible for enabling and empowering Christian missionaries in India and helped establish Bishop’s College in Calcutta. His journey throughout northern India was recorded in Narrative, a work which describes his visits to Dacca, Benares, Allahbad, Lucknow, Delhi, Bombay, Ceylon, and Madras.

While in these locations, Heber ventured into Hindu temples, encountered invalid natives, and observed Hindu Astronomy! This work includes 28 fascinating woodcut engravings throughout all three volumes depicting the sites and experiences of Heber’s journey in India.

According to Lowndes, this set is: “a highly valuable, interesting, and most delightful work.”
