“I cannot live without books.”

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson, known for his abundance of works regarding America and politics, he also published what has become known as the ‘Jefferson Bible’. This work is a pairing of two religious works regarding the life and morals of Jesus. Jefferson used major sections from the New Testament, mainly the Gospels, and focused on Jesus’s miracles, resurrection, and sermons. Jefferson never called this work a Bible, nor intended it to be, but because he systematically arranged parts of the New Testament, it has garnered that moniker.

In 1904, nearly 100 years after its first printing, the United States printing office published a lithographic edition which was quite popular for the next five decades. Interestingly, this beautifully bound work is literally a photocopy of Jefferson’s original ‘cut-and-paste’ edition.
