Michael Symes was an 18^th-century Irish diplomat most remembered for his first mission to Burma in 1795. This expedition, which was initiated by the Governor-General of India, allowed Symes to reside at Rangoon and protect the interests of British subjects and improve political relations with India. The ODNB notes this work as

‘the first detailed account of the country written in English. It addressed the history, geography, culture, and economics of Burma.’

This work is also notable for a description of the Irawaddy River – the first reliable charting of the river as well as reports on Burmese costumes, customs, art, architecture, and plants.
