John Hayward was a notable 17th-century English historian who is primarily remembered by his treatises on the reigns of British and Scottish kings. “Life and Riegne of King Edward VI” and “Henrie IIII” were published toward the end of his life. Prior to these, however, Hayward wrote a shorter work on the 1603 union of the Scottish and English crowns. This work, “A Treatise of the Union of the Two Realms” commends the union, but also gives context on what is to be expected in England under King James. Hayward had previously been imprisoned by the throne of Elizabeth I and was seeking quick approval from the new king with this 1604 work.
