This first edition of Herrmann the Magician: His Life; His Secrets by H.J. Burlingame focuses on Carl and Alexander Herrmann, brothers who performed worldwide as famous stage magicians in the late 1800s. Burlingame, who worked in the business of creating magic apparatus, includes short biographies of the illusionists along with instructions demonstrating how to perform tricks devised by the Herrmanns and other eminent performers of the era, such as Harry Kellar, Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, and Robert Heller. The book includes around 45 illustrations that display stage devices and sleight-of-hand techniques, revealing how these entertainers achieved their craft. This edition was printed in Chicago by Laird and Lee in 1897.
