This 16-volume Victor Hugo collected works set was published in Paris from 1841 to 1846 by Furne et Cie. It includes many of Hugo’s best-known early poems, plays, novels, and essays. Each volume is bound in matching 19th-century quarter morocco with gilt spines. The set includes 34 engraved illustrations. These books were printed before Les Misérables and reflect Hugo’s writing before his exile.
The set includes both well-known and lesser-seen works from Hugo’s early career. Notre-Dame de Paris and Cromwell are included, along with dramatic works like Ruy Blas and Hernani. His shorter fiction and political writings also appear. These volumes show how Hugo’s writing changed in the years before his exile from France. The steel engravings illustrate scenes and characters across the set.
