Image Gallery Description & Details

Theophrastus’ Characters is a 4th-century BC book on morality. In this book, influenced by both Aristotle and Plato, Theophrastus outlines types of morals that were most prevalent during his time. This work is known to be the first recorded attempt at systematic character writing. Interestingly, this same work would be the basis for Isaac Casaubon’s first work of illustrative commentary.

This 1617 bilingual edition was edited and translated by Casaubon and a reissue of the original 1592 edition; however, this edition is considered the best and most complete of all of the editions. Casaubon’s own commentary and notes are also featured in this edition. Sandys states that this edition includes 28 of Theophrastus’ characters, an increase of five from any previous printing.
