Image Gallery Description & Details

This 1832 literary annual with Romantic poets includes selections from John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Samuel T. Coleridge, Thomas Moore, and William Wordsworth. Titled The Talisman; or English Keepsake for 1832, it was printed in London by Whittaker, Treacher, and Co., and in Paris by Giraldon-Bovinet & Co. A separate engraved title page presents the alternative name, Bouquet of Literature and the Fine Arts. This was produced as a literary gift book during the period when such volumes were fashionable across Britain and Europe.

Wordsworth’s “The Savoyard” appears among the entries. Keats and Shelley are represented through selections not commonly found in early gift-book formats. The volume includes seventeen full-page steel engravings. These plates, along with the red Moroccan leather binding, reflect the decorative traditions of this genre, and the whole is printed on high-quality paper.
