1802 – American Lessons in Reading – Webster | Famous English Reader
Noah Webster’s 1802 American reader helped shape early United States education, pronunciation, grammar, and national linguistic identity.
The name ‘Webster’ has become synonymous with dictionary and American language over the last century. Noah Webster sought to create a purely ‘American’ culture that was independent of British claim, he achieved this by creating his dictionary – a work that helped distance American grammar and linguistics from that of Britain.
One of Webster’s supplemental works was his Lessons in Reading and Speaking which was designed to aid teachers in their instruction. It includes sections on geography and history, as well as excerpts from Cicero’s ‘Orations’.
