1894 – Tom Sawyer Abroad – Mark Twain | First UK Edition
Tom Sawyer Abroad by Mark Twain, first UK edition, London: Chatto & Windus, 1894, follows Tom and Huck on a balloon voyage to Africa and includes 32 pages of publisher advertisements in original cloth binding.
Mark Twain and his works were immensely popular all on their own. Such notable characters as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stood out above other 19th-century literary characters, and not just in the United States. However, Twain sought to show his level of literary ability and expertise with the 1894 classic Tom Sawyer Abroad.
Jules Verne created several adventure novels, many of which are still well-known and popular today; however, Twain wanted to parody the Verne-style adventure. In Tom Sawyer Abroad, Twain puts Tom and Huck in a futuristic hot air balloon ride to Africa where they encounter world wonders, robbers, and other adventure tropes. While it has nowhere near the popularity of the original Twain ‘Adventure’ titles, Tom Sawyer Abroad is still a fine work of American adventure fiction.
