Image Gallery Description & Details

A Journal of the Life, Travels, and Gospel Labours, of a Faithful Minister of Jesus Christ, Daniel Stanton is a rare 1772 printing of Stanton’s journal. This scarce first edition recounts Stanton’s journeys as a Quaker minister, traveling across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. His journal also describes voyages with Samuel Nottingham to Barbados, Antigua, and Tortola, together with observations of meetings held with Indigenous groups at Edgepelick (Brotherton).

Bound in the same volume is Some Memoirs of the Life of John Roberts, an account originally printed in 1766 by Henry Miller, recording the religious life of an English Friend connected with both Gloucestershire and early Pennsylvania. The combination of Stanton’s narrative with Roberts’s memoir makes this copy especially distinctive, presenting paired testimonies of Quaker experience on both sides of the Atlantic during the eighteenth century.
