Discovery of the Practices of the Spanish Inquisition – Montanus – 1625 | Torture, Secrets
Rare 1625 London edition of González de Montes’s account of the Spanish Inquisition, translated by Vincent Skinner, exposing rules of secrecy, imprisonment, interrogation, and torture.
A Full, Ample and Punctuall Discovery of the Barbarous, Bloudy, and inhumane practices of the Spanish Inquisition, against Protestants by Reginaldus González de Montes was published in 1625. This English translation of Sanctae inquisitiones Hispanicae artes aliquot detectae was translated by Vincent Skinner and is considered one of the best English treatises on the Spanish Inquisition.
First written at the end of the Inquisition, this book discloses the secrets behind the procedures of interrogation and imprisonment, but perhaps more interesting, the secrets behind Inquisition torture! It remains one of the primary sources for the study of Reformation propaganda following the Catholic Inquisition in a protestant Europe.
