Sermons of the Rev. C.H. Spurgeon – Charles H. Spurgeon – 1860s | American Early Printings
These six volumes from Sermons of the Rev. C.H. Spurgeon were published in America leading up to the Civil War, when the theology and clear teachings of the “Prince of Preachers” were in high demand.
This Sermons of the Rev. C.H. Spurgeon is an extensive yet curated series of Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s sermons, published during the 1860s in response to the growing demand for devotional and religious literature leading up to the Civil War. Spurgeon, often hailed as the “Prince of Preachers,” gained widespread acclaim for his direct, scripture-centered preaching style. The set compiles Spurgeon’s sermons from the formative decades of his ministry, with the American imprint reflecting his growing transatlantic influence after the Second Great Awakening. American editions such as this played a significant role in shaping 19th-century evangelical thought in the United States, particularly in Northern Protestant circles who cited Spurgeon’s anti-slavery stance in their own abolitionist sermons. This set of Sermons of the Rev. C.H. Spurgeon was published between 1860-1869 in a joint publication by Sheldon and Company, Gould & Lincoln, and S.C. Griggs, and includes the Second through Seventh Series.
