Image Gallery Description & Details

John Smith was a 17th-century theologian and leading figure among Cambridge Platonists, who sought to reconcile Christian theology with reason and classical law. Smith died at a young age; however, his legacy rests on his posthumously published collection of discourses, simply named “Select Discourses”. Published in 1660, this work addresses the most controversial themes of 17th-century debate including superstition, atheism, prophecy, vanity, immortality of the soul, and divine providence. Smith, a disciple of Benjamin Whichcote, framed his theology as an alternative to both rigid dogmatism and skepticism. His writings illuminate a moment in English intellectual history when faith and rational inquiry were carefully balanced.
