The Salt-Cellars – C.H. Spurgeon – 1889 | Proverbs with Commentary
The Salt-Cellars is the most quotable of Charles Spurgeon’s works, being a two-volume alphabetical collection of sayings and proverbs from the Prince of Preachers. This 1889-1891 set, published by Passmore and Alabaster, includes Spurgeon’s commentary and additions.
The Salt-Cellars is an alphabetical collection of proverbs and aphorisms, collected by the “Prince of Preachers” Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Many of these sayings and witticisms appeared earlier in his John Ploughman titles but are presented here with expanded remarks and new inclusions, with accompanying notes written by Spurgeon himself. The set reflects a consistent theme of moral commentary drawn from everyday sayings.
‘British Weekly’ says of this work:
“These proverbs and quaint sayings may be of great service in sermons and platform addresses. Preachers and speakers would do well to make a judicious use of them.”
