1656 History of Roman Neck-Rings – Gripenhielm – 1656 | Scheffer on Military Ornamentation
Latin treatises by Gripenhielm and Scheffer from 1656 on Roman sculpture and ancient torques, with four folding engravings and a full leather binding.
Emundi Figrelii De statuis illustrium Romanorum by Edmund Gripenhielm is a 1656 survey of Roman statues and inscriptions found on prominent ancient monuments. Gripenhielm, more commonly known as Figrel, includes descriptions of figures such as mythological figures like Cupid and Heracles, Roman gladiators, and even a curious section on magic statues!
This 1656 edition is also bound with Johannes Scheffer’s De antiquorum torquibus, a study on ancient torques, or neck-rings. Scheffer describes ornamental neckwear worn by Celts, Gauls, and Romans in military and cultural traditions with references made by classical authors such as Livy, Pliny, Virgil, and Tacitus. This volume contains four folding engravings.
