1890 – Paradise Lost – John Milton | Folio Illustrated by Gustave Doré
Milton’s Paradise Lost, issued ca. 1890 by Cassell in a large folio edition, includes all twelve books and 50 full-page engravings by Gustave Doré, with an editorial preface by Robert Vaughan.
“When Cassell saw the Dore Bible, they personally approached Dore to do Milton” (Malan, Gustav Dore). Dore established himself as a prolific 19th-century illustrated and artist and the demand for his work was escalating. Thus, this rare edition is valuable and desirable much like many of the other titles Dore illustrated. “Gustave Dore, it has always seemed to me, was a motion-picture art director born before his time.” (Harryhausen)
