Image Gallery Description & Details

Beginning in 1855, the United States Congress published reports and surveys of certain railroad routes from the Mississippi River westward to the Pacific. This volume from Reports of Explorations and Surveys covers the routes through Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. This includes a report on the 38th and 39th parallels.

Perhaps the best aspect of this book is the descriptions of Native American tribes including Apaches, Lipans, Camanches, Kiowas, Tonkawa, Wacos, and Wichitas

Per Larned,

“Narrative reports of many officers on various routes, giving much information concerning the western country. The publication of the reports being chiefly in the form of original journals, kept day by day, gives them a certain accuracy that might have been lost had the writers more frequently indulged in general descriptions.”

This volume work includes 41 fascinating engraved plates of landscapes, as well as the geology and botany found around several pacific railroad routes.
