1898 – Robert Peary | First Edition | Arctic Exploration – Northward over Great Ice
Peary’s Northward over the “Great Ice” (1898) is a two-volume record of his early Arctic expeditions, featuring over 800 images and firsthand notes from Greenland between 1886 and 1897.
Robert Peary was a 19th-century American explorer who made his fame on his numerous expeditions to the Arctic regions and claiming to have reached the North Pole. Prior to his 1909 expedition to the North Pole, Peary published an important report describing his first two Arctic voyages. In Northward over the Great Ice, Peary describes his voyage to Greenland:
“this narrative has been written to supply a complete authentic record of my Arctic work and covers all my work. The reader will find no padding, no resumes of previous work nor constant reference to other explorers.”
