Des weyland hocherleuchteten Theologi – Johann Arndt – 1733 | True Christianity
Johann Arndt’s Wahres Christentum, printed in Frankfurt in 1733, a landmark devotional of Pietism with 35 plates, original brass-clasped leather binding, and a striking double-page red and black title page.
Johann Arndt was a 16th-century German theologian who is best-known for his influential Lutheran devotionals. His devotionals and biblical interpretation were one of the foundational works in Pietism including his most famous book Wahres Christentum. Also known as True Christianity, this work became the foundation for Catholic and Protestant devotionals throughout the next two centuries.
This 1733 edition is illustrated with dozens of elaborate, full-page engravings and a double-page title page which sets it apart from other similar 18th-century devotionals.
Worth noting, the top and bottom fore-edge of the tome has a decorative illustration, drawn at some point in the book’s history.
