Image Gallery Description & Details

John Jewell was a 16th-century English bishop known for his support of Elizabeth I and the Church of England. Throughout the 1560s, Jewell developed a heated rival in Thomas Harding. Harding refused to conform to the Church of England and was promptly fired by Jewell; however, the two escalated their hatred through numerous literary attacks.

This 1585 work discusses Jewell’s attacks against and toward Harding, collected and translated by William Whitaker. It includes a defense of reformation doctrine on scriptural authority, sacraments, and church order attempting to show that Anglican reform aligns with early church teachings.
