Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin is a highly influential text in Protestant theology. Calvin laid out plainly and authoritatively the tenants of Reformed theology, such as predestination and justification through faith, designed to inform and encourage believers. The set also includes Calvin’s arguments against Roman Catholic practices of the time, such as the selling of indulgences and the belief in Purgatory. This 1845 English edition, translated by Henry Beveridge, was printed in Edinburgh by the Calvin Translation Society, is complete in three volumes and includes an extensive introduction with historical material that is frequently left out of later editions.
