Image Gallery Description & Details

Hippiater expertus by Georg Simon Winter is the continuation of his much more famous Bellerophon, sive Eques Peritus. This work is one of the best and most comprehensive early-modern veterinary guides for horses, first published in 1678. Published in Nuremberg, this work includes both German and Latin translations in one tome and is notable for the dozens of in-text woodcuts depicting horses. The folio volume explores equine medicine through the lens of Galenic theory, and covers diseases affecting the horse’s nervous system, eyes, teeth, and joints, along with digestive and urinary issues. Practical topics include diet, dislocation correction, and fracture stabilization.
