Image Gallery Description & Details

Historiarum ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii is a 1483 first edition of Flavio Biondo’s famous and foundational history of Europe. Biondo, a premier figure of Renaissance historiography, is best remembered for this work in which he helped consolidate our concept of history into three separate divisions (Ancient, Middle, and Modern). In fact, modern scholarship credits Biondo and this book to be the pivotal source in that development.

Biondo began his book focusing on the fall of Rome in 410 through the mid-15th-century with most of the history involving Italian powers such as Milan Florence, Venice, and of course Rome.

This 1483 incunable is exceedingly rare and should be treated as one of the most desirable works of European history ever to be published. Not only is it the foundational work of divisional history, but it is complete including original blanks prior to the first leaf of text.
