Faithful Contendings Displayed by Michael Shields is an historical, theological narrative first published in 1780. It recounts the struggles of the Scottish Covenanters, especially the group known as the “suffering remnant.” During this time, many Covenanters held illegal field meetings (“conventicles”), were imprisoned, exiled, or executed.

Shield defends the persecuted Covenanters including numerous letters and correspondences throughout the Church of Scotland.
