Image Gallery Description & Details

The Early Jesuit Missions in North America by William Ingraham Kip presents English translations of letters from 17th- and 18th-century French Jesuit missionaries, recounting their experiences among Indigenous nations in New France, such as the Iroquois and the Abenaki or Algonquin. Published by Wiley & Putnam in 1846, Kip’s compilation was a frontrunner of early American religious histories, predating Reuben Gold Thwaites’ comprehensive Jesuit Relations series and Francis Parkman’s The Jesuits in North America. This volume reflects the 19th-century fascination with missionary encounters and colonial evangelism, providing anecdotes of life among the tribes along with their conflicts and customs.
