1490 – Dominican Teaching & Sermon Preparation | Herolt Incunable, First Edition
Printed in Strasbourg in 1490, Herolt’s Latin sermon guide outlines essential teachings for parish clergy including commandments, sacraments, and prayers used in pre-Reformation pastoral work.
Discipulus de eruditione christifidelium by Johannes Herolt is a rare 1490 incunable written to help Dominican fathers and ministers with their preparations for Sunday sermons. It covers a wide variety of topics including teaching on the Ten Commandments, the seven deadly sins, The Lord’s Prayer, the Creed and sacraments, as well as instructions on mercy.
While the content is not uncommon from a literary standpoint, the 15th-century printing makes this one of the earliest works of its kind.
