Image Gallery Description & Details

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. He is most known for his work De Civitate Dei. City of God was a response to the assertions that the rise of Christianity was the cause of the decline of Rome. In this work, Augustine discusses the existence of God and evil, an all-knowing God, original sin, and Christian doctrines. Augustine sought to denounce much of the magic and pagan worship that was rampant throughout the known world.

This 1474 incunable printing was published in Rome by Ulrich Han and Simon Chardella in a substantial, first edition folio. The very first printed version of City of God was only 7 years prior in 1467, making this printing truly one of the earliest printed editions of Augustine. Any incunable printing of any work is rare in itself, but editions printed in the 1470s are considered the most desirable and rarest forms of incunable works.
