1629 – Talmud Commentaries, Johannes Coccejus | First Edition, Sanhedrin & Maccoth
Latin commentary by Coccejus on Sanhedrin and Maccoth with Hebrew and Greek text, printed Amsterdam 1629, vellum-bound and referenced by Newton.
Duo Tituli Thalmudici, Sanhedrin et Maccoth by Johannes Coccejus is a 1629 treatise written as a commentary on two rabbinic texts – Sanhedrin and Maccoth, paired with original Hebrew and Greek excerpts. Coccejus translated segments of the Talmud and included insights from traditional commentators. This work is particularly notable, not only to Hebraists and Christian scholars, but to those taken by Isaac Newton scholarship – this book was known to be referenced directly by Newton (Goldish).
Notably, this example was owned by the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews.
