1558 – Biblia Sacra | Holy Bible – Bernard Salomon Art, Tournes & Estienne Latin

An impressive and highly rare 16^th-century Biblia Sacra published by Joannes Tournes in Lyon. In 1554, Tournes published his Latin Bible, based on the popular translation of Robert Estienne. Tournes include the woodcut illustrations of Bernard Salomon, now which are referred to as ‘le petit Bernard’. This 1558 printing the now famous Salomon / Tournes Biblia Sacra is one of the earliest examples of this Bible, retaining each of the highly desirable art of Salomon.

Both Jean Tornaesium (Jean de Tournes) and Bernard Salomon worked in Lyon (Lugduni), in the mid-16th-century producing emblem books containing the art of Salomon. Salomon’s work have been known to inspire entire schools of art, including the School of Fontainbleau, in which his small scale designs were important to the art.

Condition:

Very Good. Full leather binding remains tight and secure with wear and rubbing at corners. Pages show age toning, with notable staining to preliminary leaves. Illustrations remain intact.
