1745 – Old Testament History – Baumgartner | Moses, Holy Land Maps, & Exodus
1745 first edition of Uebersetzung der Algemeinen Welthistorie edited by Baumgarten and Semler. German translation of English historical scholarship covering Exodus history, ancient Near Eastern peoples, and classical antiquities with ten engraved plates.
The Algemeinen Welthistorie was an 18th-century historical journal collected to provide a complete and thorough history of the world. First edited by Siegmund Baumgarten and later by Johann Semler, this recurring work was a collection of articles by English scholars then translated and edited by Semler and Baumgarten – who Voltaire called ‘the crown of German scholars.’ This volume concentrates on Biblical antiquity and the ancient Near East. Subjects include the Exodus, the peoples of Canaan, Moab, and Ammon, the Temple of Baalbek, the ruins of Palmyra and Tadmor, and the antiquities of Sidon. Additional sections examine the journey of the Israelites toward the Holy Land, the account of manna, and the leadership of Moses. Ten engraved plates accompany the historical study.
