Algernon Swinburne was a 19^th-century English author known for his poems and ballads. He wrote numerous works that edged on the excessive and controversial; however, one collections of works that was the complete opposite was his series of poems on childhood – “The Springtide of Life”. These poems describe life as a child – children’s games, laughter, songs, baby-birds, and playing – and have remained some of Swinburne’s most famous works. In fact, the Arthur Rackham-illustrated edition of ‘Springtide of Life’ is still highly sought after even today.

 

This first Rackham edition of Swinburne’s “Springtide” is an impressive piece, signed by Rackham and numbered no. 523 of 765.
