1908 BEAUTIFUL 1ed Princes & Princesses Haakon Norway Napoleon Valois Lang
Andrew Lang was a late 19th-century children’s book author who is best known for his colored ‘fairy books’. He and his wife recognized that fairy stories were immensely popular amongst young readers. According to the preface of “Princes and Princesses”, Mrs. Lang says,
“There are some children who [say] that stories about fairies are true, and that they like fairies; and that they do not like true stories about real people who lived long ago.”
The Lang’s decided to publish a collection of true stories that would fascinate children – children who would primarily want to read exciting fictional stories. Notable stories found in this book include those of the lives of:
- Napoleon Bonaparte
- Haakon III of Norway, grandson of King Sverre
- Jeanne d’Albert, Queen of Navarre
- Henrietta of England, daughter of Charles I
- Marie Louise d’Orleans, niece of Louis XIV
- Isabella of Valois and princess of France, married Richard II of England to become Queen of England at the age of 7!
