Taylor and Holub’s “Africa Illustrated” is a large book filled with photographs and sketches of life in Africa. Emil Holub and William Taylor were inspired by the diaries and adventures of David Livingstone to take their own expedition into the ‘dark continent’. Upon their return to Europe, they published this work detailing their discoveries in Zambezi, focusing primarily on the people and cultures they encountered. Each page of this work includes photogravure-like illustrations with captions under each.

One of the more bizarre illustrations depicts a fetish house, or juju, on the Niger river.
