Joseph T. Wilson was an African-American soldier who served in the 54^th Massachusetts during the American Civil War. While his military career was not extensive, it did provide him with an understanding of the role that black men had during the 19^th-century. He began writing poems and speeches, most of which were used to push an abolitionist-like agenda – black suffrage, full citizenship, and social reforms. His best book, and to this day most-known, was ‘The Black Phalanx’ which was the most comprehensive study of African-American military service in the 19^th-century.
