Chevalier de Seingalt, better known as Giacomo Casanova, was an 18^th-century Italian author best known for his memoirs, “Story of My Life”. According to Zweig, Casanova’s memoirs are considered

“the most authentic and provocative source of information about the customs and norms of European social life during the 18^th-century.”

This book helped establish his reputation as a womanizer, which, today ‘Casanova’ is still synonymous with such a disposition. However, in addition to meeting women, Casanova describes his political and social encounters with popes and European royals like Catherine II and Frederick of Prussia as well as prominent figures such as Voltaire and Rousseau.
