1868 Japanese Tale of Genji Muromachi Kunisada Illustrated Samurai Geisha 3v

 

This is an interesting 19th century woodblock-print book titled “Muromachi Genji Kochounomaki,” which is an adaptation of Murasaki Shikibu’s “The Tale of Genji” set in the Muromachi period. The book was written by Ryutei Tanehiko II, also known as Ryutei Senka, a disciple of Ryutei Tanehiko I, who first adapted the original work into “Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji.” The illustrations in the book were done by Baichourou Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Kunisada II. The book is a significant example of the ukiyo-e genre, blending literature and art into a cohesive form.

 

This rare 1868 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations of samurai, fights, and courtesans throughout!
