In July of 1864, in the town of Chambersburg, confederate general John McCausland lead a charge on the small town and burned most of the buildings to the ground.

 

American historian B.S Schneck published an account shortly after the events in Chambersburg, identifying both the egregious and compassionate Confederate officers, the destroyed buildings, and the Union responses to the destruction.
