Originally published in 1841, George Catlin’s ‘Letters and Notes on American Indians’ covers the lives, customs, hunting cultures, and societies of Plains Indians. Catlin, a painter and author, was the first white man to depict these Indians in their native territories, whilst on his travels to the American West.

This 1842 edition of ‘Letters and Notes’ was the first published by Hazard and features over 300 sketch engravings of Indian battles, chiefs, expeditions to the American West, and homes and villages. These illustrations were published as a collection later following the success and popularity of this work. It also includes vocabulary of Mandan, Blackfoot, Riccaree, Sioux, and Tuscarora Indians. (Smithsonian 687).

According to Wagner-Camp,

“Catlin illustrated his book with line-cut reductions of his original paintings, and in the text described his adventurous years among the Indians. He recorded his observations of ceremonies, dances, hunting methods, forms of warfare, and the ways of daily living among the major tribes of the high plains and the Rocky Mountains”.
