Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851, of which the content was considered ‘valuable scholarship’ by critics.

In 1847, the United States Congress passed an act which collected the history of Native American Indian tribes, a task which Schoolcraft headed. This enormous study includes Schoolcraft’s findings and surveys of the mental acumen of Indian tribes, discovery and use of arrowheads and other tools, finding of gold deposits in California, Native American organization and governing bodies, cave drawings, and census of Algonquin and Iroquois groups.
