Carl von Rokitansky was a 19^th-century Austrian physician who, in addition to establishing schools of medicine, was a key figure in developing diagnostic methods using science. It was through his own methods of testing and experimenting that he was able to identify some of the most common diseases of the arteries. In his book “Diseases of the Arteries”, Rokitansky describes his autopsy methods for looking at and describing arteries. First published in 1851, this book was a massive success and proved to be a reliable resource for physicians treating arterial diseases.

This 1852 folio of Rokitansky’s ‘Arteries’ includes 23 full-page engravings. While 19^th-century medical folios are rare in themselves, a work specifically focused on arteries is considerably more exclusive.
