- V. H. Ellis – Augustus van Horne Ellis (1827–1863), an American lawyer, sea captain, and soldier. He was a brevet brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War, after being first a captain in the 71st New York State Militia and then the first colonel of the newly raised 124th New York Infantry. He was killed in action at the Battle of Gettysburg, and his image is the one atop the Gettsyburg memorial statue to the 124th New York.
