Hugh Clapperton and Dixon Denham were 19^th-century English explorers who is best known for their 1822 African expedition. While there, Denham and crew encountered numerous slave-trade exploits and did their part to rescue slaves. Following the mission, Denham and Clapperton aided the British plan to help settle rescued slaves in England.

In 1829, following Clapperton’s second voyage to Africa, he published an expedition memoir, describing the events of the journey, descriptions of cities and villages near the Nile River, and the curious findings of Clapperton’s investigation into the death of Mungo Park.
