It also happens to be one of the most historically accurate and relevant much in part to the availability of first-hand manuscripts from Thomas Jefferson. While the majority of the work focuses on the development of American culture and politics, Burk does provide context for influences including ancient Egyptian commerce, Carthaginian military, and Columbus and Spanish exploration.

These first two volumes from the 1804 first edition include many of Thomas Jefferson’s own remarks found in his “Notes on the State of Virginia”.
