Unsure? Ask an Expert!

François-Adrien Boieldieu was an early 19th-century French composer known for his operas. While not nearly as famous as his German and Austrian contemporaries such as Mozart, Boieldieu did write operas that have maintained popularity even into today’s music repertoire. One such opera was his ‘The Caliph of Baghdad’ – a comedic opera in which Boieldieu incorporated musical styles from beyond French taste.

This complete conductor’s score of “The Caliph of Baghdad” was published in Lyon in 1803, only three years after its debut. Interestingly, this example includes choral scores from 1938 – ephemera that is not typically sold with this or any such conductor’s score. This particular example also features German text pasted or handwritten over the original French.
