1784 1ed Capt James Cook Pacific Voyage Illustrated MAPS Eskimos Hawaii 3v SET
“Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it.”
– James Cook
James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for his three major world voyages. The initial reason for his expeditions was to seek clarification and discover unknown regions in the Southern Hemisphere, mainly Australia and the surrounding islands. According to Hill,
“In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the Southern Hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was the first really scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge”
The third Pacific voyage, which began in 1776, took Cook and his crew around New Zealand and Hawaii. On this trip, Cook took his ship northward to the Aleutian Islands reaching to the Arctic Circle. Cook eventually died upon his return to Hawaii, after angering the King of Hawaii. The events of this voyage became quite popular in the western world, much in part to the narrative that Cook himself wrote concerning the journey.
This 1784 first quarto edition of the third voyage is incredibly rare and valuable! In it, authors describe Cook’s experiences amongst the natives of North America, walrus hunts, and even an illustrated account of Cook’s death in Hawaii! Note the highly coveted full-page and folding maps – including the map of the Sandwich Islands!
