In 1781 Guillaume Raynal wrote an anti-American treatise entitled ‘Revolution in America’! This works included Raynal’s views on the motivation and foundation of American independence. Raynal claimed that America’s desire for independence came from the refusal to pay English taxes rather than abide by the principles of a democratic government. This treatise incited instant response from notable American politicians including Thomas Paine. Paine published a letter addressed to Raynal in which he noted all of the mistakes in Raynal’s theory.
