John Hawkesworth was an important English book editor, most known for his commission to edit Captain James Cook’s ‘Voyages’. First published in 1773, Hawkesworth edition of ‘Account of the Voyages’ included the stories of various important excursions of John Byron, Captain Wallis, Carteret, and of course James Cook. Sadly, many critics disapproved of his work claiming it to be inaccurate; even though that may or may not have been the case. He describes the customs and manners of the people living in the South Seas, as well as specific highlights from the voyages.

This first volume contains illustrations and descriptions of some of the following:

  • Impressive maps throughout!
    • Map of New Zealand
    • Bay of Tolaga & New Zealand
    • Society Islands
    • Isle of Raiatea (or Ulietea)
    • Matavai Bay, Tahiti
    • New South Wales, Australia
