1756 – Grand Trictrac – Soumille | Illustrated French Board Game Manual
A rare 18th-century history of trictrac!
Trictrac is an old, French board game similar to backgammon played with tokens and dice. Throughout the 17th– and 18th-centuries, trictrac was considered part of the ‘tous tables’ games, or tables games of strategy and chance. However, author Bernard-Laurent Soumille, in 1739, began calling the game Grand Trictrac to set it apart from other similar games.
This 1756 edition of Soumille’s “Le grand trictrac” is one of the most authoritative manuals of the game enabling readers to learn the game without needing a personal instructor. Soumille describes gameplay, terms, rules, and even strategies for winning. This edition also includes, per title page, 270 illustrated diagrams depicting game-moves and strategic plays.

His office at Place Vendôme in Paris handled the accounting, disbursement, and oversight of funds for France’s naval and colonial operations at a time when they had just allied with Americans and entered the American Revolutionary War. His position placed him within the small administrative circle responsible for financing France’s fleets, colonial garrisons, and allied commitments during the American Revolutionary conflict.
