Voltaire was a versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works. He wrote thousands of books and letters, and frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma, and the French institutions of his day.

 

However, Voltaire wrote many other works that were infrequently published and rarely read, as was the case with his “History of the War of 1741”. This historical commentary was Voltaire’s reaction to the War of Austrian Succession, or King George’s War, which was curiously not included in any Voltaire complete works of the 18^th– and 19^th-century, nor was it published during his lifetime.
